Day 1

Bucharest -Targoviste – Curtea de Arges – Poenari – Sibiu
Your English-speaking guide will pick you up from Bucharest Airport or another location/hotel in the city. First visit of the day will be in Targoviste, one of the most important cities in the history of Wallachia and strongly connected with Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) ruling between 15th-16th century. Our journey to Sibiu includes a stop at Curtea de Arges, the former capital of Wallachia, to explore its 14th-century strongholds. We’ll visit the Princely Church, celebrated for its frescoed interior and early examples of Romanian paintings. The next important stop of the day is Poienari Fortress. Though now in ruins, this is known as the true castle of Vlad Tepes, or Dracula. Reaching the summit requires ascending approximately 1,480 steps, a climb that typically takes around 40 minutes. Once you reach the top, you’ll find the castle is surprisingly small. A significant portion—about one-third—collapsed down the mountainside in 1888. Legend says that, during a siege by the Turks, Vlad’s wife threw herself from a window, choosing death over capture. It’s also said that Vlad himself escaped the castle on horseback, fleeing into the mountains. In Sibiu, we will take a walking tour of the Old District, one of Transylvania’s most significant fortified towns. Founded in 1190, Sibiu’s architecture evokes other historic European cities like Nurnberg and grew to become the primary city of the Transylvanian Saxons. Our tour will include the Big Square, the Small Square, the House of the guilds. We’ll also see the Passage of Stairs connecting Upper and Lower town, the Liar’s Bridge, and the Orthodox Cathedral, styled after St. Sophia in Constantinople. Overnight in Sibiu at Casa Luxemburg 3*

Day 2

Today we’ll depart from Sibiu, with our first major destination being the renowned Hunyadi Castle or Corvin Castle. This castle was once the residence of the courageous Transylvanian Governor, Iancu de Hunedoara, also known as John Hunyadi. Constructed in the 15th century, it stands as Romania’s largest gothic castle and is reputed to be among the world’s most haunted sites. Our subsequent stop is Alba Iulia. This city traces its roots back to the 2nd century during Roman times. Alba Iulia invites us to explore Transylvania’s rich history, from ancient eras to the medieval and modern periods. We will explore the Roman town ruins, the medieval and modern Vauban-style fortifications, the Catholic Cathedral, which is Transylvania’s oldest, and the Reunion Cathedral, commemorating the unification of all Romanian provinces into a single nation. From Alba Iulia we will drive back to Sibiu. Overnight in Sibiu at Casa Luxemburg 3*

Day 3

Leaving Sibiu in the morning we will drive towards Turda Salt Mine, a real history museum of salt exploitation. Our walking tour of Cluj will showcase highlights such as the impressive St. Michael’s Church, a Gothic masterpiece, and the Matthias Corvinus House and Monument. We will also explore the charming, narrow medieval streets and squares of the old city. From Cluj we will drive on the backroads of Transylvania, to reach one of the best preserved settlements of Transylvania: Rimetea Village. Here we will admire the unique architecture of the white painted houses as well as the beautiful background of the mountain scenery.Overnight in Sibiu at Casa Luxemburg 3*

Day 4

Our route to Sighisoara includes a stop in Biertan, a UNESCO site recognized as one of the earliest German settlements in Transylvania. Here, we’ll explore the fortified church, encircled by three layers of walls, which was constructed by German peasants and served as the Transylvanian Archbishop’s residence for nearly three centuries. You’ll also hear the story of how a room within the citadel was used as a reconciliation space for divorcing couples. The earliest recorded mention of Biertan dates back to 1283, when it was recognized as a township. Once we reach Sighisoara, we will explore the medieval city and fortress, including the iconic Clock Tower, the History Museum, and the Torture Room. Sighisoara is notably the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula. He was born in 1431 in a house on Museum Square, his father Vlad Dracul was a knight of the Order of the Dragon. Sighisoara offers many attractions, such as the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, the Scholars’ Stairs, the Monastery Church, and the citadel’s towers, each with its own story. Your guide will lead the Dracula Castle tour or Bran Castle tour. We’ll conclude the day in Brasov with a brief tour (approximately 2 hours) of the enchanting medieval center.
