HIKING TOUR IN BUCEGI MOUNTAINS

The difficulty level of this tour is medium to hard.

Trip Highlights:

  • Tour beautiful Sinaia Resort and the former royal residence of Peles Castle.
  • Take a ride with cable car from Sinaia Mountain Resort.
  • Admire the fantastic view of the valley and hills of Carpathians
  • Enjoy a challenging hike in unique surroundings of Bucegi Mountains
  • Marvel at the stunning Bucegi Sfinx of Romania, a natural formation.
  • Visit the castle that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula at Bran Castle.

Day 1: Bucharest – Sinaia Mountain Resort – Omu Peak

Morning departure from your hotel in Bucharest. We drive through a chain of villages in the plain around Bucharest; then the landscape changes as we reach the Prahova Valley, one of the most picturesque places of this region, with mountain resorts spreading across it. Wide and deeply carved by the homonymous river, the Prahova Valley is an unforgettable display of the splendors nature most generously holds out. It is a narrow corridor between Transylvania and Wallachia, an ancient road that is crossed by both rail and motorways, making it one of the most visited routes in Romania.

Before starting our hiking day, you will have the chance to discover the famous castles of Sinaia Mountain Resort – which served as a residence for the Royal family. Sinaia began developing into an important settlement with the construction of the famous Sinaia Monastery in 1695. The fast pace of Sinaia`s growth is connected to the development, in the south Carpathian area, of the extractive and oil processing industries, and to the construction of the road connecting it to Bucharest at the end of the 18th century. The construction of the railway (1879) and of Peles Castle followed. Sinaia was declared a town in 1880, thus being one of the oldest urban mountain settlements in the country.

Peles Castle Complex – here is one of the best-preserved royal palaces in Europe. The Castle is full of ornaments the inside as well as on the outside, and features elaborate wood sculptures and paintings representing scenes from the works of German composer Richard Wagner.

From Sinaia Mountain Resort (about 100 km from the Bucharest airport – 2 hours driving), we climb up to 2000 m (by cable car or by foot – your choice) and we trek on the Bucegi Plateau to the Omu Hut.

Bucegi Mountain Range is part of Southern Carpathians stretching out between the two historical regions of Romania, Transylvania and Wallachia. Bucegi Mountains display a wide range of geographic units: spectacular quays carved in limestone, ice valleys, astounding walls made up of conglomerates, where the acrobatic climbing can be practised, sharp towers, but not the last weird  natural formations formed by erosion, such as  giant stone mushrooms called Babele, (Old Ladies) the famous Romanian Sphinx. There are a multitude of legends and origins of these mysterious stone sculptures, especially aroud the bucegi sfinx. Although the official story is that these stones were shaped by the wind. I’m not that sure if this is the case, as these stone mushrooms are granite which is one of the hardest rocks formations and generally resistant to a hammer and pickax.

Bucegi Mountains have very good marked trails and the signs are in very good condition. All the areas are patrolled by the mountain rescue teams. There are also many mountain huts. These offer food and accommodation, so they can be used if one is planning a longer journey.

Overnight at guesthouse or pension.  Each room has private bathroom. The price do not include breakfast, but you can order it separately. Also you may buy meals for lunch and dinner.

Day 2: Bucegi – Bran Village – Sinaia Mountain Resort – Bucharest

In the morning we depart from Omu Hut towards Bran Village. This route will take us between 5-8 hours with medium to hard effort, uphill walk: 1500 m. Getting closer to Bran Village we will admire the pasture land where the shepherds still make smoked cheese like hundreds years ago. Down to Bran Village and visit Bran Castle a.k.a. Dracula’s Castle.

Transfer by local bus from Bran Village to Sinaia Mountain Resort and then car transfer to Bucharest.

The first historical reference of Bran Castle or Dracula`s Castle, is a document issued on November 19, 1377 by Ludwig I d’Anjou, by which Brasov inhabitants received the privilege of building the a fortress “at their own work and expense”. Between 1920-1927 Bran Castle was restored under the supervision of Karel Liman, the architect of the Royal Court, who turned it in a beautiful summer residence surrounded by a park with promenade alleys, lake, fountains, arbors, and a tea house. In 1938 Queen Maria of Romania bequeathed Bran Castle with all its domains, to her daughter Princess Ileana, who owned it until 1948.

Excellent tour around Romania visiting Transylvania and the painted monasteries in Bucovina I had a great time on a private tour during November, which was booked at extremely short notice. Ion did an amazing job putting together the tour within 24 hours, and we started the trip only a couple of days after enquiring which was amazing! His communication was really fast, clear and helpful, and our driver/guide Florin was great - both ensured we had a wonderful time in Romania. The choice of accommodation was brilliant, varying from modern hotels to centuries-old period properties. I would thoroughly recommend contacting Romania Tour Store for anyone looking to travel in Romania with a friendly, reliable and trustworthy local company.

What an amazing trip! From beginning to end, Ion was absolutely fantastic. We spent 11 days with him traveling Bulgaria and Romania, and I have to say—he covered every single detail. He was incredibly accommodating, taking into account our preferences, offering helpful suggestions, and always finding the best dining spots. Before the trip even began, Ion was efficient and thorough, providing us with several itinerary options to ensure we could visit all the places we were interested in. Believe me when I say, my husband is a very difficult traveler—but Ion made everything so easy and fun that, by the end, they were like best friends! We had a passport mishap, leaving them behind in Bulgaria, and as soon as we arrived in Romania and realized, Ion immediately jumped into action. He contacted the hotel and made sure the issue was resolved quickly and smoothly. One of the highlights of the trip was being welcomed into Ion and his wife’s home, where they prepared a delicious homemade meal for us. It was a fantastic evening, full of authenticity and warmth—we truly felt like family.Ion also helped us find the best hotels for our stay and coordinated the entire trip from start to finish. At every attraction we visited, he was knowledgeable and provided detailed explanations, adding so much value to the experience.I highly recommend Romania Tour Store if you're planning a trip to Romania and Bulgaria. And if you’re not already planning to visit these two beautiful countries—please reconsider! They’re full of charm, culture, and unforgettable experiences.Thank you, Ion and Romania Tour Store, for making this one of our best vacations ever.

It very nice tour, we started 08:00 in Sibiu and drove towards Sarmizegetusa, afterwards there was a lot of interesting information about Dacia. Afterwards we went towards Hunedoara to visit the very beautiful castle there. Finally to Alba Iulia to see the citadel (star), including the churches and the history behind it. Also very interesting the story of Hunyadi. Highly recommended, the guide was very nice and everything was relaxed. VG

Tour with Ion Ion was terrific, a very kind guy, and he was very patient with us; he took us to incredible places. He changed the plan for us because it was Christmas's second day, and most of the tourist places were closed, so he suggested places for us, and we had so much fun together.

Ion Dima...a great tour guide! This review is very tardy due to the situation in the world from January 2020 until now. I was so fortunate to have found Ion Dima during my planning of a visit to Romania which was during the summer of 2019.( I had to enter 12/21 in the description since that was the oldest date available.) I had several days to fill in with a visit to important points of interest in Romania before I joined a group in Bucharest. The group and I were heading into Moldova, Transnistria, and Ukraine. We were only doing the Danube Delta down on the Black Sea and I didn't want to miss seeing something of Romania. Well, Ion designed a terrific tour for me that was very complete! He speaks perfect English and was very considerate and great fun to be around. I highly reccommend arranging a tour with Ion...he's the best!!

Bespoke service We are just back from an extended tour of Romania with Romania Tour Stores. It's a bespoke travel company which specialises in private tours for culture vultures. From Bucharest's Belle Epoq architecture we travelled to the cultural centre of Iasi, the painted monasteries of Moldavia, and through the fortified Saxon churches and towns of Transylvania. Finally, we arrived in the stunning city of Brasov in the Carpathians where the Austro-Hungarian influence sits on the edge of Wallachia and Byzantium. Grand hotels and traditional wooden cabins. Each day felt like being in a different age or country. A superbly organised tour of this fascinating country. We are planning a return visit next year.
