Day 1: Bucharest – Sinaia – Bran – Brasov

The tour begins with a morning drive north from Bucharest towards medieval Transylvania. The route crosses an area protected by the Carpathian Mountains, with historic forests, mountain landscapes and abundant wildlife.

Peles Castle in Sinaia

The first stop is Sinaia, a charming mountain resort closely connected with the flourishing period of Romanian royalty. Here you will visit Peles Castle, one of the best-preserved royal palaces in Europe.

Peles Castle is richly decorated both inside and outside. Its interiors include elaborate wood sculptures, ornaments and paintings, some of them representing scenes inspired by the works of German composer Richard Wagner.

Bran Castle – Dracula’s Castle

After passing through the mountain scenery, the tour continues to Bran Village, where you will visit Bran Castle. Its striking hilltop position has contributed to many myths and legends, and the castle is widely known as Dracula’s Castle.

The first historical reference to Bran Castle dates from November 19, 1377, in a document issued by Ludwig I d’Anjou. Through this document, the inhabitants of Brasov received the privilege of building the fortress at their own work and expense.

Between 1920 and 1927, Bran Castle was restored under the supervision of Karel Liman, the architect of the Royal Court. He transformed the castle into a summer residence surrounded by a park with promenade alleys, a lake, fountains, arbors and a tea house.

Brasov Medieval Town

The final stop of the day is Brasov, one of the most important medieval towns in Transylvania. According to historical references from 1234, Brasov was known as Kronstadt. Its history began in the 13th century, and many of its medieval walls, towers and historic buildings are still preserved.

During the second half of the 14th century, Brasov was confirmed as the administrative and ecclesiastical center of Tara Barsei and became known as a free royal town. It developed into one of the important economic and cultural centers of Transylvania.

Brasov is located in central Romania, about 166 km from Bucharest, and is surrounded by the Southern Carpathians. Its old town is well preserved and can also be admired from above by taking the cable car to the top of Tampa Mountain, at 995 meters.

Sighisoara Citadel

In Sighisoara, you will explore the Old Town with its cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches. The visit includes the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill and the house traditionally associated with the birthplace of Vlad Tepes, born in 1431.

The houses inside Sighisoara Citadel preserve the character of a medieval craftsmen’s town. Some buildings belonged to the former town elite, including the Venetian House and the House with Antlers.

Central Sighisoara has preserved the features of a small medieval fortified city in an exemplary way and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each July, a Medieval Festival takes place in the old citadel.

Biertan Fortified Church

After leaving Sighisoara, the tour continues to Biertan, a UNESCO site in Romania and one of the first German settlements in Transylvania.

The Fortified Church of Biertan is surrounded by three rows of fortifications. It was built by German peasants in medieval Transylvania and was used for nearly 300 years as the residence of the Transylvanian Archbishop.

One of the rooms in the citadel was used for a long time as a reconciliation place for couples who were about to divorce. The story will be explained during the visit.

The name “Biertan” was first attested in 1283, and the settlement had township status.

Sibiu Old Town

The tour then continues towards Sibiu, one of the most important fortified towns in medieval Transylvania. Founded in 1190, Sibiu grew to become the chief city of the Transylvanian Saxons.
