About the Two Famous Castles Tour

This private day trip from Bucharest follows one of the most visited routes in Romania, connecting Wallachia with Transylvania through the Prahova Valley. After leaving Bucharest, the route passes through villages in southern Romania before reaching the mountain area.

As the road enters the Prahova Valley, the landscape changes. The valley is crossed by road and railway routes and forms a natural corridor between Wallachia and Transylvania. It is known for its mountain resorts, river valley scenery and views of the Southern Carpathians.

During this one-day private tour, you will visit Sinaia Mountain Resort, Peles Castle, Bran Village, Bran Castle and Brasov.

Tour Highlights

  • Scenic drive through the Prahova Valley
  • Visit Sinaia, one of Romania’s historic mountain resorts
  • Explore Peles Castle, one of the best-preserved royal palaces in Europe
  • Visit Bran Castle, widely known as Dracula’s Castle
  • Short tour of Brasov, the medieval city once known as Kronstadt
  • Return to Bucharest in the evening

Bucharest to Prahova Valley

After morning pick-up from your hotel in Bucharest, the tour heads north towards the Prahova Valley. The road passes through villages in southern Romania before reaching the mountain region.

The Prahova Valley is a narrow corridor between Wallachia and Transylvania. Wide and deeply carved by the Prahova River, the valley is one of the most important routes across the southern Carpathian area and one of the most visited mountain regions in Romania.

Sinaia Mountain Resort

The first major stop of the tour is Sinaia, a mountain resort closely connected with Romania’s royal history.

The development of Sinaia began after the construction of Sinaia Monastery, started in 1695. Over time, the settlement became increasingly important. Its growth was connected to the development of extractive and oil processing industries in the southern Carpathian area, as well as to the construction of the road linking the region with Bucharest at the end of the 18th century.

The railway arrived in 1879, followed by the construction of Peles Castle. Sinaia became one of the oldest urban mountain settlements in Romania and was declared a town in 1880.

Peles Castle

At the Peles Castle Complex, you will visit one of the best-preserved royal palaces in Europe. Peles Castle served as a residence for the Romanian Royal Family and remains one of the most important historic landmarks in Sinaia.

The castle is richly decorated both inside and outside. Its interiors include elaborate wood sculptures, ornaments and paintings, some of them representing scenes inspired by the works of German composer Richard Wagner.

Bran Castle – Dracula’s Castle

After visiting Sinaia, the tour continues through a dramatic mountain landscape towards Bran Village. Here you will visit Bran Castle, widely known as Dracula’s Castle.

The first historical reference to Bran Castle dates from November 19, 1377, in a document issued by Ludwig I d’Anjou. Through this document, the inhabitants of Brasov received the privilege of building the fortress at their own work and expense.

Bran Castle was later restored under the supervision of Karel Liman, architect of the Royal Court. He transformed the castle into a summer residence surrounded by a park with promenade alleys, a lake, fountains, trees and a tea house.

In 1938, Queen Marie of Romania bequeathed Bran Castle and its domains to her daughter, Princess Ileana, who owned it until 1948.

Brasov Medieval City

Before returning to Bucharest, the tour includes a visit to Brasov, one of the most important historic cities in Transylvania.

According to historical references from 1234, Brasov was known as Kronstadt. During the second half of the 14th century, it was confirmed as the administrative and ecclesiastical center of Tara Barsei and became known as a free royal town. It developed into one of the economic and cultural centers of Transylvania.

Brasov is the capital of Brasov County and is located in central Romania, about 166 km north of Bucharest. Surrounded by the Southern Carpathians, the city is part of the Transylvania region.

Because of its central location, Brasov is a good starting point for trips around Romania. It is also the largest city in a mountain resort area. The old part of the city is well preserved, and one of the best panoramic views can be seen from Tampa Mountain, at 995 meters, accessible by cable car.

Return to Bucharest

After the visit to Brasov, the tour returns to Bucharest in the evening.

Traffic to the mountain area can be heavier than usual, especially during official holidays and weekends. In these situations, the return to Bucharest may be later than scheduled, around 9:00–10:00 PM.
