    A real experience

Sibiu to Bran Castle and Brașov Day Trip

Discover some of southern Transylvania’s best-known landmarks on a full-day trip from Sibiu. This private tour combines the medieval atmosphere of Brașov, the history and legends of Bran Castle, and the mountain scenery of the Făgăraș and Piatra Craiului areas.

The standard itinerary includes a visit to Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery, located at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains. If you prefer wildlife or outdoor activities, you can replace the monastery visit with either the Libearty Bear Sanctuary near Zărnești or a short hike through the traditional mountain villages around Bran and Piatra Craiului.

Bran Castle and Brașov remain the main highlights of the day, while the first part of the itinerary can be adapted to your interests.

Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery and the Făgăraș Mountains

We leave Sibiu in the morning and travel east through the countryside towards the Făgăraș Mountains and the historic region known as Țara Făgărașului.

Our first stop is Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery, also known as Brâncoveanu Monastery. Surrounded by forests and mountain scenery, the monastery offers a peaceful start to the day before we continue towards Bran and Brașov.

The history of the monastery is closely connected with Constantin Brâncoveanu, Prince of Wallachia between 1688 and 1714. The monastery developed at the end of the 17th century and became an important Orthodox religious and cultural centre in southern Transylvania.

During the visit, you can walk through the monastery grounds, admire its Brâncovenesc architecture and enjoy the views towards the nearby Făgăraș Mountains.

Afterwards, we continue through the Transylvanian countryside towards the Bran area.

    Alternative 1: Libearty Bear Sanctuary

If you are interested in wildlife and conservation, the visit to Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery can be replaced with a visit to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary near Zărnești.

Located in a large forested area close to the Piatra Craiului Mountains, the sanctuary was created to provide a more natural environment for brown bears rescued from captivity.

During the visit, you can learn about Romania’s brown bears, wildlife conservation and the individual stories of some of the rescued animals. The focus of the sanctuary is on animal welfare, rescue and conservation rather than on the traditional zoo experience.

Visits to the Bear Sanctuary must be arranged in advance and depend on the sanctuary’s schedule and ticket availability.

After the visit, we continue towards Bran Castle.

Alternative 2: Hiking Through the Mountain Villages

If you prefer nature, rural landscapes and walking, you can replace the monastery visit with a short hike through the traditional mountain villages around Bran and Piatra Craiului.

Villages such as Măgura and Peștera are scattered across the hills between the Piatra Craiului and Bucegi Mountains and offer a quieter side of Transylvania, away from the busier tourist attractions.

Depending on the weather, the time available and your fitness level, we can choose an easy walking route through meadows, small farms and traditional villages.

The hike can be adapted to the group and does not need to be particularly long or demanding. The aim is to enjoy the mountain scenery, walk through the countryside and see a little of everyday life in Romania’s rural mountain communities.

After the walk, we continue towards Bran Castle.

Bran Castle – History, Royalty and the Dracula Legend

Bran Castle is one of Romania’s most famous landmarks and one of the main attractions of this day trip from Sibiu.

Built on a rocky hill overlooking the Bran Valley, the medieval fortress once guarded an important route between Transylvania and Wallachia.

Over the centuries, Bran Castle served several purposes, including as a defensive fortress, a customs point and, much later, a royal residence.

In the 20th century, the castle became closely associated with Queen Marie of Romania, who made Bran one of her favourite residences. For many international visitors, however, Bran Castle is best known as “Dracula’s Castle”.

Its connection with Dracula is based far more on legend and popular culture than on documented history. The links between Bran Castle, Vlad the Impaler and Bram Stoker’s fictional Count Dracula are limited, which makes the story behind the legend particularly interesting.

Brașov – Explore the Historic Old Town

After visiting Bran Castle, we continue to Brașov, one of Transylvania’s most attractive historic cities.

Brașov developed during the Middle Ages with an important contribution from the Transylvanian Saxons and became a prosperous commercial centre. Its location along trade routes connecting Transylvania with Wallachia and Central Europe played an important role in the city’s development.

We will explore Brașov Old Town on foot and discover some of its most important landmarks.

Depending on the time available, the walking tour can include: Council Square; The Black Church; Republicii pedestrian street; Catherine’s Gate. You will also have some free time to enjoy Brașov at your own pace, have lunch or stop for a coffee around Council Square.

    Return to Sibiu

In the late afternoon, we leave Brașov and begin the journey back to Sibiu.

The return drive takes us through the landscapes of southern Transylvania, with views of the Carpathian Mountains, the Olt Valley and the villages of the Făgăraș region.

We normally arrive back in Sibiu in the evening.

Choose the Version of the Tour That Suits You

One of the advantages of this Sibiu to Bran Castle and Brașov day trip is the possibility to adapt part of the itinerary according to your interests.

You can choose between three options:

    Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery

Recommended if you are interested in Romanian history, Orthodox culture, architecture and peaceful mountain surroundings.

    Libearty Bear Sanctuary

A good option for travellers interested in wildlife, brown bears, animal rescue and conservation.

    Hiking Through the Mountain Villages

Recommended if you prefer spending time outdoors and want to experience mountain scenery, traditional villages, photography and rural landscapes.

Whichever option you choose, Bran Castle and Brașov remain the main attractions of the tour.

Why Choose This Sibiu to Bran Castle and Brașov Day Trip?

This day trip brings together several different sides of Transylvania in one itinerary.

You can discover a medieval castle, explore one of Transylvania’s most important Saxon cities, learn about the history behind the Dracula legend and travel through the landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains.

Depending on your interests, you can also add Orthodox heritage at Sâmbăta de Sus Monastery, wildlife conservation at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary or an easy walk through traditional mountain villages.

The itinerary can therefore be adapted while keeping Bran Castle and Brașov as the main highlights of the day.
