A vacation during the fall season could be a preview of the long-awaited winter holidays. You don’t necessarily need snow to enjoy some free days visiting a beautiful city or just spending some time in the middle of the nature. There are many activities that you can do and places as a fall destination, even if at first glance you might ask: why should I take a vacation in October or November? However, the fall season could be perfect to travel to Romania because there are less tourists, less crowded places and the landscapes are worth your time! Therefore, here are a few ideas for an autumn vacation in Romania!
Turda Salt Mine
It’s one of the 25 most beautiful travel destinations in the world, at least that’s what the editors from Business Insider say. Furthermore, it can be an ideal seasonal destination for those who are suffering from of viral infections. How about spending a few days in the treatment center? The salt mine is highly indicated for those with respiratory problems: the temperature is constant, it is about 10 Celsius degrees, the humidity is kept somewhere between 70% and 80%, and the aerosol concentration is optimal. As a matter of fact, the Rudolf mine works as an underground treatment facility since 1992, and the treatment center provides accommodation for several days for those who want to spend some time underground.
Apart from the fact that it is a treatment center indicated for the cold season, a visit to Turda salt mine is also recommended for those who travel with children because the little ones can have fun in the underground fun park, they can go on a boat ride on the lake or can do all kinds of interesting activities. Occasionally, show performances take place in a specially designed hall.
Maramures
This beautiful region has several tourist attractions that have gained worldwide recognition, but over the last years, plenty of tourists are eager to discover an old tradition that was revived: taking a ride on the “Mocanita”. In Romania there are many charming trails built for the mocanite (old steam locomotives originally used for the transport of wood), some of which are very little known by tourists. The route on the Vaserului Valley is one of the most famous and longest – it is almost 56 kilometers long and crosses several mountain ridges up to 1100 meters altitude. Regardless of the season you choose to visit the Vaser Valley, the experience will be unprecedented.
The Mocanita from Maramures is the most famous, but equally beautiful and picturesque is taking a ride on the one from the Banat region, on the “hutca” from Bucovina or on the one passing through the “Love Tunnel”. The main characteristic of all these trains is that they go very slowly (having steam locomotives), but this allows you to enjoy the view and even take some amazing photographs during the ride.
Sighisoara
The town of Sighisoara remains one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. Authentic, colorful, welcoming, full of immortal stories and fine people, the fortress of Sighisoara has become a real magnet for foreign tourists. Attentive to Count Dracula’s legend, they “invade” the town to discover the house where Vlad Tepes lived, the Romanian ruler who was forever named Count Dracula because of Bram Stoker’s novel.
But the real house where Dracula lived is not the only one taking advantage of the myth. The entire town seems dedicated to revive its medieval heritage along with the story of Dracula, so don’t be surprise to see Dracula-themed objects, foods and activities all over the place. However, if you take the time, you can also discover some authentic craftsmen that can show you a thing or two about old crafts that have been long forgotten.
Bran Castle
Although it’s typically associated with Dracula’s image, the Bran castle is still one of the most beautiful and well-preserved medieval castles in the country. But not only the castle is what should draw tourists, but also the entire Bran region. As a matter of fact, another real location that you can find described in Bram Stoker’s novel is the Bran-Rucar passage.
A vacation spent in the Rucar-Bran area can always be a story on its own. You won’t see high heights, but the quiet hills on the edge of this aisle are very suitable for a fall vacation. In fact, the weather is not so pleasant to have fun doing mountain hiking when it’s cold, and as the snow has not yet appeared, you will have no reason to try finding a ski slope. As for the villages in the Bran area, you will see on their own how fascinating they are.
If you want calm and relaxation, splendid landscapes and fresh air, try to get away from Bran Castle and tourists. The Rucar-Bran passage offers you much more: you can visit Simonului Valley or Frasin Valley and enjoy the peace that surrounds you. Then, if the time and weather allow you, visit the rocky canyon of Dambovicioara and one of the two caves: Dambovicioara Cave and the Bats Cave.
Corvin Castle
Spectacular and impressive, the Corvin Castle preserves the outskirts of Hunedoara city. Its warm colors perfectly match the brown shades that nature has during the fall season. A painting worthy of the most talented painters will lay in front of you, and all you have to do is sit somewhere at a considerable distance, stretch on a warm blanket and admire the spectacle that nature has prepared for you.
Needless to say that if you are looking for that creepy Gothic atmosphere for the Halloween season, you will find plenty of that at this castle, considering that some even say that it’s haunted!
Depending on the time of your visit and on the type of vacation you are interested in, you can opt for visiting other popular fall destinations in Romania, you can investigate the mysteries behind the haunted places in Romania or you can create your own Romania tour, with the highlights that are most important on your travel bucket list.
