Bucegi Mountains mysteries
The Bucegi Mountains shelter one of the most impressive natural monuments in Romania, the Sphinx. The shape of this rock formation resembles a human face, and many believe that this shape is a direct result of erosion produced by wind over a long time.
However, scientific evidence is contradicted by some theories claiming that the monument is proof of a much more advanced civilization, or that it was built by the Dacians as a tribute to Zalmoxis (an important deity in their past). Regardless of which theory is true, the Sphinx indeed has certain peculiarities that differentiate it from any other rock formation of this type.
The Sphinx got this name because it resembles a human head, more precisely to the Egyptian Sphinx. Located in the Bucegi Mountains at an altitude of 2,216 m, the Sphinx is formed from a large block of stone measuring 8 meters in height and 12 meters in width.
Connections between the Romanian Sphinx and the Sphinx from Egypt
Due to the similarity between the Romanian Sphinx and the Great Sphinx of Egypt, some historians assumed one was inspired by the other. To support this theory, they use the information that the Egyptians would have gone through the Carpathians until they settled in the present territory, and during their journey, they could have seen the rock formations that are today on the Romanian territory. At the same time, the connection between Romania and Egypt seems to be far from what was initially imagined. Some voices say there is a tunnel of time between the Sphinx in Bucegi and Egypt, and the same tunnel may contain information on various subjects (genetics, religion, cosmology, astronomy), and well-kept secrets about the continents of Atlantis and Lemuria, about the Great Flood in the Bible, or the existence of Jesus and his crucifixion.
The tunnels would have been known by a very small number of people during the Dacian era when they either played a strategic role or were used to hide treasures. Those who took measurements say some galleries communicate through the mountains with Retezat and Rarau, from the Ceahlau Massif. On these peaks would have been, as well as on the Omu Peak, sanctuaries that together formed the “Golden Triangle” of Dacia because of the impressively great energies that would appear in the three points.
Alien civilizations and the Sphinx from Bucegi
The idea behind the contradiction of scientific data on the origin of the Sphinx belonged to the architect and historian Daniel Ruzo. Ruzo claimed that the Sphinx is evidence of the existence of an alien civilization that would have left behind several constructions, including the one from the Bucegi Plateau. From the first statements about the connection between the Romanian Sphinx and extraterrestrial civilizations, there have been many speculations about how it was formed, when it was formed, and especially why it was built. So far, there has been insufficient evidence to support this theory, but there are researchers who are still struggling to solve the enigma.
Place of worship for the Dacians
The local legends regarding the Sphinx go back in time, to when the Dacians inhabited Romania’s territory. It is said that the Sphinx would have a sacred meaning, and it was formed during the Dacian era. The Bucegi Plateau was the meeting place of those who wanted to bring Zalmoxis an offer, and it all started from Decebal’s sacrifice. It is said that the Dacian ruler murdered his son to send him as a messenger to the gods.
Strange energies surrounding the Bucegi Plateau
The Bucegi Mountains mystery along with old legends around the Sphinx origin are a magnet for tourists who come by thousands to visit the monument of nature from the top of the Bucegi Mountains. Along with Babele (The Old Ladies), it represents a place of pilgrimage each year at the end of November, on the 28th, when the effect of the “energetic pyramid” occurs. Due to the sun’s rays, a so-called pyramid is formed above the Sphinx, which is believed to emit positive energy.
Other Sphinx-like rock formations in Romania
In the Romanian mountains, there are other formations of the same genus, the megalithic type, which, due to the wind erosion, have taken on the aspect of sphinxes, including the Sphinx from Stanisoara, the Sfinx from Toplet, the Sphinx from Piatra Arsa, and the Sphinx from Solomon’s Stones, but also the one named Brotocei. However, none of these megalithic formations has succeeded in reaching the fame of the Sphinx from the Bucegi Plateau.
Since ancient times, humans have simply been fascinated by this wonder of nature. As proof is the oldest photograph of the Sfinx from Bucegi as the main subject. It dates to 1900 when photographic techniques were just at the beginning. Taking these into account, we can very easily see how important this formation was for tourists if, in those conditions where cameras weighed extremely much, there was someone who made a purpose of taking its picture.
Regardless of how many polemics will be born on this subject, geologists say there is no secret from their point of view. Both the Sphinx and Babele were formed following the abrasion phenomenon over a long time.
Travel to Romania during Covid pandemic and Russian invasion to Ukraine
Tourists visiting this area will be charmed by the crisp, cool and clear mountain air, and the breathtaking landscapes untouched by time. Exploring Bucegi Mountains with large or smaller groups (for example with family or good friends) can be rewarding and Covid risk-free, as Romania implements and follows all the cleaning and sanitization procedures to protect and welcome its guests in a safe and comfortable environment.
The recent Russian invasion of Ukraine may be a matter of concern for tourists willing to visit landmarks in Romania. At this point, travel to Romania is not assessed as being at risk.
Visiting Bucegi Mountains during these trying times can put things in perspective and help tourists take a break from the fear-based news while reconnecting with nature and rediscovering an uncomplicated way of living, full of meaning.

It`s not easy to reach the Sphinx of Bucegi and we would recommend at least one day hiking tour of Bucegi.
Another interesting place is Iulia Hasdeu Castle in Romania. The work on it began in 1893, after Hasdeu’s (Romanian writer, historian politician) daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that dramatically shook and changed Hasdeu’s life. He claimed that his belated daughter provided the plans for building the castle during sessions of spiritism.
