March can be the perfect month for a short march getaway in Romania, as a lot of important events take place at the beginning of the spring. However, if you don’t want to break your holiday budget yet because you have something planned for the summer or later in the year, rest assured. We have a few ideas for affordable destinations and fun events that take place throughout the month of March.

1.The Martisor fairs
Martisor Fairs open their gates and invite you to admire various items, decorations and jewelry, which can offered as symbolic gifts on March 1st, for Woman’s Day or simply as a token of your appreciation for friends and family. Although larger fairs that have become important events in bigger cities such as Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca or Brasov are interesting for those who want to find all kinds of unique gifts, small Martisor fairs can be found in most cities and towns at the beginning of March. The reason being that they are all related to the traditional holiday called Martisor, which is celebrated each year on March 1st, the first day of spring.
Generally, women and girls receive small items, similar to charms, called martisoare and wear them during March to celebrate the arrival of spring. In the Moldova region, however, it’s customary for girls to give these charms to boys. Asides from martisoare, spring flowers are often offered, the most representative of which being the snowdrop, so don’t be surprised to see an abundance of snowdrops or violets bouquets in flower markets at the beginning of March. All the charms are accompanied by a red and white string which has different significances, depending on region, but it’ generally considered a good luck charm. Initially, charms offered on Martisor were simple, representing flowers or animals, but nowadays some gentlemen prefer to offer elaborate gifts, ranging from all kinds of sweets to jewelry.
In addition, Woman’s Day is celebrated in Romania on the 8th of March, which is another reason for men to offer women flowers or small gifts. Restaurants and other entertainment venues often organize special events on this occasion or at least there’s a lady’s night in every club or pub.
2.The Slanic Prahova salt mine
Turda may be the most popular salt mine in Romania, but it’s not the only one. Slanic Prahova is one of Romania’s hidden gems. It’s located about 100 km from Bucharest, in a beautiful landscape, because of the hill area covered with dense forests. Visitors’ access to the mine is currently made with minibuses up to a depth of 208 m. In this “salt palace”, opened in the 1970s, the microclimate is constant and very different from the one at surface.
In the Unirea section, there are sports fields, volleyball, handball, tennis and minifootball, playgrounds, carting and mechanical games. Various competitions and exhibitions are held in Unirea mine. In the Mihai section, national and international aero modeling competitions take place (this is possible due to the special climate in which the air speed is close to “0”) and where the tourists’ access is also allowed.
After spending a day in the Slanic Prahova you can find other attractions in the region, such as a wine tasting at the vineyards of Dealu Mare.
3.Camping at Vidraru Lake
One of the best parts of visiting Romania is the fact that the landscape’s diversity makes it possible to enjoy plenty of outdoor activities. At the end of March, the weather is usually already warmer, which creates perfect opportunities for those interested in going camping. One of the most relaxing places to go camping is Vidraru Lake.
The Vidraru dam in the Fagaras Mountains was built in 1965. Few people know that its creation has led to the disappearance of an entire village, with its remains now found on the bottom of Vidraru Lake. Legends say that many people in the village of Cumpana, who did not want to abandon their homes and work, preferred to stay there when the authorities responsible for the construction of the Vidraru dam decided to flood the area. Although these are probably just legends, it’ certain that during periods when the water level was very low, the remains of two of the most important buildings from the village were visible on the bottom of the lake.
The place has attracted in recent years many extreme sports enthusiasts. Here is a high bungee jumping launch track, but it’s usually open only during summer. There are several ships on the lake to go on a short cruise, you can go cycling or rent a rowboat for fishing.
4.Magura village
Located about 30 km of Brasov, the village of Magura is called “the heaven from Piatra Craiului Mountains”. The fresh mountain air, endless green stretches, the hills full of sheep flocks and the relaxing atmosphere will make you irremediably fall in love with this picturesque corner of Romania.
Whether you ride a bike, go for a walk or enjoy a trekking tour, natural landscapes will delight you as much as the hospitality of the locals. Nearby tourist attractions are the Holy Trinity Monastery, the Bran-Rucar Pass, the Little Magura Peak and the Bats Cave.
5.Rustic march getaway in Viscri
If even Prince Charles chooses to spend his holidays here sometimes, it means that the small village of Transylvania, which has already entered the UNESCO heritage, is a place to go. And why not do it on the March getaway?
